Intraspecific Competition

● Intraspecific competition can be defined as the competition between individuals belonging to the same species for essential resources such as food, water, space, sunlight, or mates. As these resources are limited, the individual have to compete with each other; this reduces the fitness of individuals of the species, and hence, does not let the population of the species grow exponentially.

● Let us explain how this works, when we say a population grows exponentially, we mean that the size of a particular population increases continuously. As resources are limited, an increase in the number of individuals reduces the amount of resource available for each individual, and thus, may have a negative effect on the growth of the population.

● We can thus say that as the population size of a species increases, the intraspecific competition between the individuals of that species also increases. The effects of intraspecific competition has far reaching effects on population size of a species as compared to interspecific competition. The reason for this is simple, as the individuals of the same species compete for identical resources (space, food, and mate), this type of competition is more pronounced.

● Intraspecific competition can either be direct, in which the individuals literally fight each other over the resources. Sometimes, it may be of an indirect manner, where one individual may exhaust a particular resource.

During the mating season or rut males try to collect as many females as possible, even if the female doesn't belong to the territory. ● Male Red-winged Blackbirds establish territories specifically for the purpose breeding during breeding season. The male and females do go out of the territory for foraging, but other males aren't allowed to enter their territories.

● In European adders, the males might fight potential rivals (for mates) by performing the ritual, what zoologists like to call, the "adder dance". The males raise the front part of their bodies vertically and sway with an attempt to push the other to the ground, this continues until one of them gives up and slithers away.

● It has also been observed that Chilean flamingos show aggressive behavior in defense of their mates and offspring.

● The brown river trout are seen to self-limit themselves and can be considered as an example of population dependent intraspecific competition. These fish are capable of adjusting their rate of fertility depending on the amount of space available for the population, and thus, maintain an almost steady rate of population growth.

● When food in the surrounding environment is extremely scarce, certain animals may resort to cannibalism and consume individuals of their own species. Sharks, rodents, and other animals are examples this phenomenon. There have been instances in history where even humans have resorted to this mean.

● Sometimes, intraspecific competition can be more indirect, where there may be decrease in the number of prey for another individual. When a lioness hunts a prey, say an antelope, that antelope can no longer be hunted by another lioness.

● In juvenile wolf spiders, the siblings don't compete with each other directly. Here, all the individuals feed on the limited food resource to exhaust it after a certain period of time. This decreases the fitness of every individual in the population and may cause a decrease in the population size due to starvation.

● Adult gray seals show niche partitioning and differential habitat preference as a form of intraspecific competition. The juvenile seals only take shorter and shallower dives, whereas the adult seals have almost exclusive access to the rich benthic zone and are able to forage easily.

● In white-faced Capuchin monkeys, both males and females compete over the limited source of food. Individuals with a better access to food and the most dominant individuals get the larger share of food. Thus, the resources are distributed unequally between different individuals.

These days, one often hears of people suing others for extreme reasons. Take for example the woman who spilled coffee on herself while driving, and then sued McDonald's, saying that they were guilty of making very hot coffee. Another case is where a man set a ladder in a pile of manure, and then sued the ladder company, upon falling. While these cases may seem silly, there's more to them than meets the eye.

Stella Liebeck, the woman who sued McDonald's, suffered serious burns on 6% of her body, because the fast food giant produces coffee hotter by 50ºF than ordinary. On the other hand, Larry Hodge did not slip from his ladder; it broke under his meager weight, despite the company claiming it could handle up to 1,000 lb.

He/she can fight for financial penalties, called 'sanctions', to be imposed on the opposite party.

However, an appeals court reversed the order, because it was found that a passenger in the car was able to swim to safety, and the alcohol level in Norman's blood was 0.17 (twice the approved limit).

In 1991, the brewing company Anheuser-Busch was sued for $10,000 by a man named Richard Overton, who claimed that the company indulged in false advertising, as he did not have any success with women after consuming their 'Budweiser' beer, contrary to what was shown in their television advertisement. The case was thrown out of court.

In 1995, Robert Lee Brock, an inmate at a Virginia prison, sued himself for a sum of $5 million. How to Roast Cashews

We suggest you get peeled raw cashews. If, however, you are unable to find peeled ones, get them raw and peel them before roasting (best of luck with that!).

#1. In the Oven With Oil

✦ Preheat the oven to 325°F.

✦ Drizzle the cashews with some vegetable oil (about half a tablespoon of oil for every ¾ cup of cashews).

✦ Add the seasoning to it and mix well so that the cashews are properly coated with it.

✦ Place the nuts in a single layer on the baking tray. Place them in the middle rack of the oven and let them roast for five minutes.

✦ Remove the tray from the oven and stir them once again. Return the tray to the oven and let them roast for about another ten minutes.

✦ If they look a bit pale, you can roast them in the oven for an additional ten minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on them (you don't want to burn them). Ideally, it's fine if the cashews are a tad underdone, as they keep cooking even after they are removed from the heat.

✦ Let them cool for a few minutes (say, ten or so) before you store them in a container (you definitely do not want soggy cashews).

#2. In the Oven Without Oil

✦ Once again, preheat the oven to 325°F.

✦ Place the cashews in a single layer on a baking tray lined with baking parchment or silicon baking sheet.

✦ Place the tray in the middle rack of the oven and let them roast for twelve to fifteen minutes; stir after six minutes or so.

✦ In the meantime, make a salt solution by boiling about three tablespoons of salt in a cup of water.

✦ Once the nuts are almost done, remove them from the oven and spray a bit of the salt solution on them.

✦ Roast them for a few minutes more to evaporate the water sprayed.

✦ Remove them from the heat and let the nuts cool for a few minutes before storing them.

#3. On the Stove

✦ Add a little oil (half a tablespoon for every ¾ cup of cashew) to a skillet pan (or any heavy bottom pan) and swirl it around so that it coats the entire surface of the pan.

✦ Keep stirring the cashews constantly to prevent them from burning.

✦ Give it about three to four minutes on the heat.
